iDeal scams: how to stay safe when switching to Wero

Attention! A new type of scam via iDeal is circulating. With the transition from iDeal to Wero (the new European payment system), criminals are trying to steal your data or money. Hoogma Webdesign, the internet and website specialist, is happy to help you stay safe online.

What changes in 2026?

From January 2026, iDeal will be permanently discontinued and Wero will be implemented. The European system is based on iDeal and makes international payments easier. A secure digital Wallet app will also be introduced.

During the transition, you may see the Wero logo on payments that previously went through iDeal. For users, little else changes – except that you now need to be extra alert for scams via messages.

How to recognize scams?

Criminals often send misleading text messages, emails, or WhatsApp messages about the transition from iDeal to Wero. Watch out for these signs:

• You are asked to take action for the transition to Wero.
• The message contains a link to an unknown website.
• The sender cannot be verified through official channels.

Tip: Never click on suspicious links and never share personal information. If you are unsure, contact your bank or provider via their official website or phone number.
